About Rosso di Montalcino 2012 Pian Delle Vigne, Antinori

This Rosso di Montalcino is the first one ever produced at Antinori's Pian Delle Vigne Estate. It has been created through years of experimentation with the vines to achieve a wine that is both high quality but with youthful approach ability and charm. 100% Sangiovese, it now joins the other two wines from the estate, Brunello Pian delle Vigne and the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vignaferrovia. The Pian delle Vigne estate takes its name from a 19th century railroad station located within the confines of the property. Located to the north of the Orcia river valley and and just south of the town of Montalcino the estate has just over 150 acres of vines. The southeastly exposure and the high altitude between 400 and 650 feet above sea level allow the grapes to ripen fully but mature slowly and evenly. This ripe red was aged 12 months in large oak casks before bottling and shows ripe fruit aromas on the nose of plums and cherry, the characteristic floral notes of Sangiovese, and toasty and spicy sensations from the oak aging. The palate is supple with silky tannins. It's fresh and crisp with bright cherry notes and hints of mineral, earth and smoke. This is a Rosso that can stand up beautifully to many a Brunello.
