After Jayson Pahlmeyer's dream of owning Grand Cru Burgundy vineyard land was dashed he was fortunate enough to discover Wayfarer. Just down the road from Helen Turley's celebrated Marcassin Vineyard, this extraordinary terroir was just what Jayson was looking for to produce world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Just two vintages in it's clear that Wayfarer wines are something truly exceptional and who knows, perhaps what one day will be Grand Cru Burgundy's biggest rival. This 2013 Pinot Noir from the Estate Wayfarer is a formidable wine. Grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted, setting aside 8% for whole-cluster fermentation. The remaining berries were then de-stemmed and hand-sorted again before transfer to tank. Five to seven days of cold maceration preceded more than two weeks of 100% native yeast fermentation. The fruit was then gently pressed, its free-run juice transferred to 40% new French oak barrels for 15 months of aging. Antonio Galloni scored this 94 points saying "The 2013 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard is supple, expressive and exceptionally beautiful. Plump red cherries, plums, cinnamon and rose petals meld together in a racy, effortless Pinot built on texture and nuance. Beams of acidity and minerality give the 2013 much of its energy and delineation. This is a great introduction to the wines of the property. The Wayfarer is a blend of 12 different clones from various parcels scattered across the property. The 2013 was done with 8% whole clusters." and Wine Enthusiast Magazine also gave it a 94 point score saying "An estate blend of 12 different clones, this dark ruby wine is bristling in acidity and swirling in flavors of strawberry, cherry and wild fennel. Well integrated and concentrated, it offers a fully balanced, elegant expression of the site. It provides a perfect introduction to the winery's lineup of site-specific Pinots.
