About Copain 2014 Chardonnay, Dupratt Vyd., Anderson Valley

After working at Turley Wine Cellars and then with Helen Turley at Martinelli, producing the Marcassin wines, Winemaker Wells Guthrie started his own winery Copain, in Mendocino where he focuses on the unique cool climate terroir. Vineyards are selected with great care and deliberation from among the best and most distinctive in like the Dupratt Vineyard where grapes for this wine are sourced. The small, five acre DuPratt vineyard sits on a ridge in Anderson Valley at an elevation of 1,550 feet, a few short miles from the seaside town of Elk. Planted in 1983 in upland timber sandstone soils, the fruit from this site distinctively reflects its mountainous locale, yielding wines with notable acidity and an appealing, rigid structure. Aged in French oak for 10 months less than 500 cases were produced. Wine & Spirits Magazine named this the Year's Best Chardonnay saying "This comes from vines planted on sandstone at 1,500 feet in the western coastal hills of Anderson Valley. The wine's oak feels raw for now, but the site comes through with a compelling vinosity-a bold salted-apple flavor that lasts. Decant it to reveal the wine's refreshing power."
