About Burgess 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, Napa Valley

Napa Valley Pioneers Burgess, was one of the very first wineries to establish vineyards on the steep slopes of Howell Mountain. Since the outset, Burgess has turned out distinctive moutain Cabs, Merlots and Zins that gained admirers and a strong following. This 2013 is benchmark Burgess style. Grapes for this Cab are sourced from the estate vineyard that faces west from the side of Howell Mountain and has a slope averaging 22% and their Haymaker Vineyard, an eastern-facing Howell Mountain vineyard located in a frost free zone between the valley floor and mountain top with ancient marine sedimentary soils. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The Wine Advocate scored this 92 points saying "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (at a very fair price, by the way) has beautiful blackcurrant fruit, blackberry, underlying earth and spice, medium to full body, a long finish and sweet, moderate tannin. A rather classic example of Napa viticulture and still available at a shockingly realistic price. This beautiful wine is young, but reflects the greatness of 2013, and should promise to improve and evolve for another 15-20 years."
