About Rocca Di Frassinello 2013 Maremma Toscana

Rocca Di Frassinello is a unique joint venture between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite, the first partnership of its kind. The project couples Castellares experience in the growing and vinification of Sangiovese with Lafites experience in classic French varietals. Extensive research led to a site selection in the hills formed by the two sides of the old Aurelia in Monteregio di Massa Marittima. The first vineyards were planted on 17 acres in 2000; however, today, this successful project oversees almost 200 acres of vineyards in an unrivalled microclimate for native varietals. Rocca di Frassinello is the highest expression of this Italian-French project. A wine able to mix strength, intensity and elegance with delicate tannins which express its fullness. This wine was created from a collaboration between Christian Le Sommer, enologist of Les Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite, and Alessandro Cellai. A blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot aged 14 months in French oak barrels. Antonio Galloni scored this 94 points sating "The 2013 Baffonero is superb in this vintage. Nuanced and delineated throughout, the 2013 offers much more sophistication than has been the case in previous vintages. Mint, sage, lavender, sweet spices and mocha are laced into the pliant finish. All things considered, the 2013 Baffonero is a pretty delicate Merlot by Maremma standards." and the Wine Advocate scored this is 95 points and said "The 2013 Maremma Toscana Rocca di Frassinello is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot (aged in mostly new oak for two years). This is a stunning wine and is, without a doubt, one of the two best wines I have yet to taste from Rocca di Frassinello. The other is the 100% Baffonero Merlot. What distinguishes this wine is the seamless nature of its intensity and its integration. There are absolutely no rough transitions here and the wine wraps smoothly over the palate with firm determination. The dry extract is high (38 grams per liter) and all that heft and density leaves a lasting positive impression."
