About Napa Cellars 2013 Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Started by Rombauer back in the 80's Napa Cellars is now owned by the Trinchero Family Estate. As a result they are able to source premium Napa fruit from their almost 300 acres of estate vineyards in Napa Valley. That's really what makes this wine stand out and why it's so good. Zinfadel used to be much more widely planted in Napa Valley, today it only totals roughly 2% of total acreage but there are still some prime blocks, so grapes for this Zin are carefully hand-selected from vineyards in St. Helena, Yountville, Oak Knoll and Calistoga where they've located complex and concentrated fruit. After a three day cold soak, designed to extract color from the skins, the grapes are pressed early to avoid extracting harsh tannins. Following a maceration period lasting from 10-12 days, the lots are aged in 27% new French and American oak barrels for 17 months. The partial use of new oak helps preserve the big Zinfandel flavors whilestill imparting warm, spicy characteristics to create an elegant and balanced wine. This wine was awarded 95 Points, Best of Class in the California State Fair Wine Competition. It boasts bright aromas of fresh blackberries, tart cherry and hints of black tea. The aromas lead to lush flavors of ripe jam with notesof mocha, spice and sweet notes of oak on the finish. A very satisfying Zin!
