About Sancerre 2015 Grand Cuvee, Jean-Paul Balland

Only produced in the best years, this Grand Cuvee is a special Sancerre made from the oldest vines on the estate. Jean-Paul Balland is a family owned estate with about 48 acres of vineyards in some of the best areas for growing outstanding Sauvignon Blanc, Le Grand Chemarin and Le Chêne Marchand. For this wine grapes are carefully selected from a small parcel of Balland's oldest vines – 45+ years. Hand harvested, the grapes are crushed in a pneumatic press and then the wine is fermented in oak barrels using natural yeasts. Ageing is in 60% new oak casks for 12 months with regular stirring of the lees. The 2014 got a 92 point score in the Decanter World Wine Awards. They said "An intense nose of honey vanilla and sweet creamy oak follows on to sweet citrus flavors on the palate with a juicy seam of white peach fruit and smoky oak wrapped around it all."
