About Barda 2016 Pinot Noir, Patagonia, Bodega Chacra

Bodega Chacra is owned by Piero Incisa dela Rocchetta from the Sassicaia family in Italy. His property in Río Negro, Patagonia, is devoted to the production of Pinot Noir. The winemaker here is Han Vinding Diers of Noemía fame also in Río Negro. The Rio Negro valley is an former glacier, 750 feet above sea level in Argentina's Patagonia Region. Bodega Chacra's remarkable primary vineyards were planted in 1932 and 1955. The focus now is exclusively Pinot Noir wines from vines grown on their own rootstocks, believed to produce superior fruit to that of grafted vines. The unique micro-climate of this area is ideal for the maturation of Pinot Noir. Considerable winds from the west make these vineyards virtually disease-free. Limestone bedrock and two mineral-rich rivers of the Andes, the Limay and Neuquen, give the wine a distinct character. Wines are 100% biodynamic, organic, natural and unfiltered, for a pure fruit expression that reflects typicity, finesse and terroir. The grapes are picked in the early morning, before storage and de-stemming in a cool room to retain maximum freshness and acidity. 100% de-stemmed grapes are fermented in small, round, cement tanks to maximize skin contact. The grapes undergo a 3-day cold maceration - the must is pumped over 1-2 times per day to maximize extraction of color, fruit and tannins. Fermentation on natural yeasts lasts about 2.5 weeks at 79 - 82°F. After fermentation, a portion of the wine is racked by gravity into new French oak barrels of the highest quality; the rest goes into cement tanks for a total of 10 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered. James Suckling scored this 95 points and said "A fantastic Barda with dried strawberries, orange peel and tangerines. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. 60% fermented and aged in cement tanks. Tight and beautiful. Drink or hold."
