About Cask 23 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Perhaps the most iconic of all Napa Valley wines Cask 23 is the evolution of the wine that took the world by storm, beating out the great First Growth Bordeaux in the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting in May 1976. A clear measure of it's status, Cask 23 was the first Napa Valley Cab to break the $100 retail price point as dozens of course have since followed. This 2013 is another classic; a tale of two vineyards that come together in a harmonious blend. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was sourced equally from the FAY and S.L.V. vineyards, specific blocks within these adjoining ranches providing distinct attributes to the wine. Each lot was vinified and aged separately in small French oak barrels for 21 months. In the latter stages of aging the lots were blended, becoming CASK 23. Robert Parker tasting from barrel scored it 94-96 saying "The 2014s are not yet in bottle. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 Estate-Grown is a big-time winner with great fruit, terrific texture, full body, sensational purity and plenty of blue and black fruits interwoven. The amazing thing about all of these wines is that no oak shows through whatsoever, although I suspect the percentage of new oak is relatively high. That's an example of the extravagance and richness of the fruit that the winery is achieving. Again, purity, harmony, complexity and individuality are hallmarks of these wines. Drink this 2014 Cask 23 over the next 25 years."
