About Barolo 2013 Serralunga D'Alba, Giovanni Rosso
Giovanni Rosso is not simply a Barolo producer, but a Serralunga producer with around a dozen different plots within the commune. These vineyard plots include some of the most historically important areas such as La Serra, Broglio, Damiano and Vigna Rionda (each of which is mentioned in a document dated 30th May 1694) as well as Cerretta and Sorano. These plots are farmed as organically as possible, using no artificial chemical treatments such as fertilizers, insecticides or weed-killers. Harvesting is 100% by hand, as is pruning and tilling of the soil beneath the vines. Green harvesting is carried out as necessary and they allow plant growth between the rows of vines to encourage soil health and diversity in the vineyards. This wine reflects the diversity of expression found in Nebbiolo grapes grown in these different micro-climates. The fermentation in concrete tanks lasts up to 25 days with daily pumping over of the wine mass. Aging is in 50hl large barrels of Fontainebleau Forest oak (from 18 to 36 months according to the vintage and the vineyard of provenance). The Wine Spectator scored this 2013 93 points saying "Packed with sweet strawberry and cherry flavors, this red also deals leather, tobacco and tar notes from a well-structured deck.
