Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards image

(based on 65 ratings)
Located in: Wines by Type, Red
The 2006 vintage of this ripe Mendoza Malbec was rated 91 pts. and selected as Wine Enthusiast Magazine's #1 Best Buy of the Year! The 2009 is just as if not more bold, lush and intense than the 2006. Winemaker Paul Hobbs is the consulting enologist and this wine is a clear indication that he's steering this established Argentine property in the right direction. A tremendous value.

By gifted grapeVerified Purchaser from Fl on 1/21/2011
Cons:
Short Finish, Thin

Comments about Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards:

There is a big difference from the 2008 Pascual Toso
Malbec and the 2009.

The finish is short, the fruit is not as big as the 2008 and the taste appears flat and more like a blended grape juice. I am not sure if it was weather or winemaker, but very disappointed with the wine and wine express in not distinguishing this wine from it's 2008 and 2006 big brothers. Not a buy.

Comments about Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards:

I did not try the 91 point 2006 that this is compared to, but I assume this vintage shares few of the same qualities. This wine is a bit overpowering in terms of tannins and has a stong alcohol nose. We gave the rest of the bottle another try the next evening after it had a good chance to breath, but it was still something to contend with. We didn't hate the wine, but I can say that this wine was much more enjoyable during the "video tasting" than in real life.

Comments about Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards:

This wine has a very impressive tannin under-pinning that might bother those not accustomed to the Malbec grape. Hence, I believe this wine is not for the beginner, or one who is looking for a wine for casual drinking. I have had this wine with some of the more complex cheeses from Italy and France, and of course with grilled steak. This wine is NOT for pizza since the wine will over power the pizza taste without adding any benefit. Consider decanting the wine a full several hours before serving in order to soften the tannins and bring the wine into better balance. We learned about Malbec wines while we were in Argentina recently, and this wine is an excellent bargain and entirely representative of the grape. Enjoy now, or age for a few years.

Comments about Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards:

Had this with a chocolate toffy dessert and it went perfectly. Also would go well with pasta with a light tomato/cheese or cream sauce. Much like a very good ripe Merlot but more body and fullness.

Nose: Nice berry fruit with a little concrete dust.
Taste: Lots of berry fruits. Well structured with tannins, but not too much. Full and well balanced. Long finish.

I have tried many Malbecs, even in Argentina and have found some much better than this one. Its not bad but not something I would repeat, maybe its needs some aging and then it will get smoother.

Comments about Malbec 2009 Pascual Toso, Maipu Vineyards:

This is an amazing value. It matches as well to pasta with strong flavored sauces (even gourmet pizzas and strongly flavored sides) as it does well veal, beef. It is a wine that makes everything right at the end of the day--full and satisfying. Given its price, you could be forgiven if you thought it should be reserved for weekday evenings, but don't short change your friends when you entertain. It can pass as a wine priced 4 to 5 times its price point. I need to find much more of this!
