Moulis lies just a few miles to the northwest of Margaux in the Medoc. It is home to many fine Petit Chateaux including this one in the western part, where there is a ridge of limestone and gravel. The soil is ideal for vine plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. In the stupendous 2009 vintage they blended 57% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot for this estate bottled Bordeaux. Aged in oak barrels for 12 months this 2009 is a super value, showing depth structure and the ripe fruit that is characteristic of the vintage. It's neighbors a few miles east in Margaux can charge 2 to 3 times what this wine costs. It just shows you can still find bargains in Bordeaux if you're willing to search a little beyond the beaten path.
This has all the quintessential components you would expect from a quality Medoc wine. A beautiful balance of fruit and terroir with nice mineral and herbal nuances. It has a very smooth and soft mouthfeel with just enough tannins to give it some edge. Certainly drinking well now, but will gain some more character with time.
Actually, we received this wine through your wine club and loved it. I reordered it immediately! The wine club has worked well for us since we normally would not have ordered a bourdeaux. Very tasty red wine!
