Twomey Cellars by Silver Oak 2009 Merlot, Napa Valley
When Silver Oak winery wanted to expand they purchased a prime vineyard in Southeastern Napa Valley, the Soda Canyon Ranch. They discovered that amongst the vines planted in this well-drained volcanic soil vineyard, were exceptional French clones of Merlot that exhibited distinct character and intensity. Head Winemaker Daniel Baron, having worked in Pomerol and St. Emilion, had a strong affinity for Merlot and so Twomey was born. All the grapes are sourced from this unique single vineyard, where the temperate climate brings low yields and intense black-fruit character. The winemaking is slow and deliberate. The wine is aged 16 months in French oak barrels and is hand racked in a painstaking process from barrel to barrel. This eliminates the need for filtration, creating a wine with a purity and vibrancy thatís unsurpassed. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored the 2008 91 points saying "Made with a drop of Cabernet Franc, this Merlot is rich, smooth and bone dry. With modest alcohol, it brims with flavors of black and red currant, licorice, anise and white pepper, as well as a subtle touch of sweet, smoky new oak. the grapes come from the cool Soda Canyon area of Napa Valley, at the base of Atlas Peak."
