St. Francis 2011 Red Splash, Red Blend, California
Here's another of these delightful red blends we're seeing more and more of out of California. This one comes from St. Francis in Sonoma and it's a tantalizing blend of 52% Merlot, 13% Petite Sirah, 11% Syrah, 9% Zinfandel, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the remainder a blend of Carignane and Petite Verdot. It's aged 15 months in French and American oak and then 8 months in the bottle for a soft, supple mouthfeel. In March Fox News called this latest release "A Great Spring Wine... and a red with more bold and rich flavors." Earlier vintages were lauded in Food & Wine Magazine who called it "One of the Best American Wines under $15" and the San Francisco Chronicle named it a "Top 5 Hearty Red $15 and under".
I like this particular blend -- it's smooth and not too spicy -- very easy to enjoy and savor. I've visited the St. Francis winery where I purchased other nice, affordable wines. I look forward to more wines from there.
This is a really fun value red blend that St. Francis has put together. The fruit is soft and lush with red and black cherry, plum and blueberry leading the way. The vanilla and peppery notes come through on the palate which is soft and round. Great value everyday wine for the California red wine lover.
