Archipel 2007 Red Blend, Sonoma, Verite
In the rarefied air atop the Mayacamas Mountains Jess Jackson's Verite team sources mountain fruit from their estate vineyards. Elevations rise from 750 to 2,400 feet where the vines receive ample sunshine and benefit from the rocky, well-drained soils, producing small, concentrated berries. The resultant wines are deeply colored with distinctive flavors and rich concentration. Celebrated winemaker Pierre Seillan personally selects and puts together this Bordeaux style blend of blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, just as he does for Verite. And even though this is a limited production wine, aged 16 months in new French and American oak barrels, Archipel, comes to us at a far more affordable price. Steve Tanzer said it had it "Wild, musky aromas of plum, smoked meat and nutty oak. Sweet, juicy and old school, with a leesy complexity and notes of coffee, meat and green pepper currently dominating underlying fruit. Finishes with dusty, slightly drying tannins.         With the Verite team behind this stunning Bordeaux blend, it's hard to believe the affordable price tag. This wine is full of charm and charisma with beautiful black cherry, cassis, cola and black plum aromas and flavors flowing over the nutty and mineral nuances. It's big but balanced with firm tannins and a lush and well rounded mouth feel. For under $40 this is really a tremendous value.

          This has become one of my favorite wines. It is a great blend that doesn't fit well in any category. There is plenty of flavor and complexity without the heavy tannins and oak overtones. You can taste the fruit and it has a nice long finish. It drinks well right after being uncorked, but will improve with aeration. It's a great wine to serve in mixed company of wine novices to connoisseurs. Everyone can enjoy this wine. Good value for the money.

                We love the way it drinks now but this is a solid wine that will age well for 5 to 10 years. Best to try a few now and lay a few down.
