Plan de Dieu 2009 Cotes du Rhones Villages, Domaine de L'Arnesque |
 |
One of the newest recognized Cotes du Rhone Villages, Plan de Dieu was granted AOC status in 2005, though this unique area has long been recognized for producing exceptional wines. Just like Chateauneuf du Pape, the vineyards of Plan de Dieu are strewn with “gallets’, large round stones. The stones provide drainage so vine roots extend deep into the ground, but also they retain the sun’s heat, providing warmth during the cool windswept nights. This 2009 from Domain de L'Arnesque is sourced from their estate and is a blend of old vines Grenache up to 40 years of age and Syrah and Mourvedre from younger vines (averaging 10 years old). Deeply concentrated and expressive, 2009 was an outstanding vintage in this region, and this blend is brimming over with red fruit flavors and enticing notes of earth, spice roasted nuts and cedar. A Chateauneuf cousin that's easy to mistake for the original.
