Chateau Michel de Montaigne 2009 Bergerac, Mahler-Besse
This Chateau is owned by the Mahler-Besse family, owners of Chateau Palmer in Margaux and many other first class wine making properties in Bordeaux and around the world. In 1964 they rebuilt this historic Bergerac property which lies less than six miles from the village of St. Emilion. The terrior is identical to right bank Bordeaux and so the vineyards hold 60 % Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon on clay and marl soils and the vines average 20 years of age. From the outstanding 2009 vintage this wine continues to over-deliver and offer value that is practically unmatched in the world of French wine. Donít miss it.

Wasn't real impressed. Bought a half case based on the tasting video. Tasted flat to me. To be perfectly honest, it tasted like a cheap wine with a nice label. I'd drink it with pizza, but that's about it. I've found some really good wines under $30, but this isn't one of them.

This is my idea of an ideal everyday wine; red, medium body, no off flavors, balanced and most difficult to find at this price level - French "Terroir".

Comments about Chateau Michel de Montaigne 2009 Bergerac, Mahler-Besse:

We bought this wine for its historic connotation: Montaigne's chateau has been producing wine for 500 years. The Montaigne's were related to the Y'quem's so this wine is wonderful to talk about. It is fine, a bit better than the price would indicate. It will not last perhaps more than 2 years. Drink up. The problem was with delivery. I ordered when the weather was cool. It became back-ordered so I had a long wait for delivery and I would not have normally ordered wine for shipment in mid-May.

Comments about Chateau Michel de Montaigne 2009 Bergerac, Mahler-Besse:

I bought this wine because the price was right and I'm very satisfied with the purchase. We use it primarily as an everyday wine, but also use it when we have guests. Everyone who has tasted the wine has been favorably impressed. I'd buy another case if it was offered.

This reminded me of the first time I sipped a homemade wine at my wife's Grandfathers house. I would serve this at parties and also drink this as a casual everyday. A little light though.

How does this wine compare to the Chateau de Rochemorin 2009? I purchased a case of Rochemorin, and like it. I would like to see more Bordeaux offered. I like wines from Pessac Leognan, Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Emilion, Castillon, etc.

              A:

This is much lighter, less complex wine than Rochemorin. If you like Rochemorin then check out Clarendelle 2007 made by the team at Ch. Hat Brion. Also try Les Cadrans de Lassegue 2008 St. Emilion Grand Cru and Ch. Tour Saint-Vincent 2009 Medoc, Cru Bourgeois.
