Gerard Bertrand 2008 Tautavel, Grand Terroir, Cotes du Rousillon Villages
The dynamic Gerard Bertrand is owner of more than five estates in Southern France. He was named European Winery of the year in 2012 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. In the Cotes du Rousillon village of Tautavel he has almost 800 acres of estate vineyards, owning about 90% of the entire appellation. The soils are rocky limestone chalk and clay and the vines are very low yielding. Warm climate varietals as in the Rhone valley, offer great expression here. This "Grand Terroir" is a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Carignan. The wine is aged 10 months in oak barrels. Wine Spectator scored it 90 points saying "This offers the essence of blueberry, displaying touches of spicy elegance and a luscious mouthfeel. Very pure and well-structured, with a long, cocoa powder-infused finish. Drink now through 2018."
