2006 Vina Zaco was chosen by Wine Spectator as one of their Top 100 Wines of 2009. Rioja Vina Zaco from Bodegas Bilbainas is a fruit-forward Tempranillo with just enough oak aging to add intriguing notes of complex spice and vanilla. 100% Tempranillo carefully vinified to bring out the rich fruit. A short cold-maceration is followed by a slow, cooler than normal fermentation with skin contact for a full two weeks to extract as much flavor and color as possible. Nine month in French and American oak followed for a complex intermingling of flavors both spicy and succulent. Wine Spectator scored this 2010 90 points saying "This red shows focus and good density, with ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and plum accented with toast and coffee, all supported by well-integrated tannins. Leafy and minerally accents linger on the finish. Drink now through 2016." This one could be headed for the top 100 list once again. A great value!
