An extraordinary and historic bottle of wine. 1970 you may remember, was a classic vintage in Bordeaux. Well, in Rioja it was one of the all-time greats. Faustino produces Gran Reserva only in the best vintages. With 1,625 acres of vineyards, Faustino's Gran Reserva wines are all estate grown and bottled. The vineyards are located in the upper portion of the Rioja Alavesa,
at an altitude of 1,200- 1,800 feet. Here, the climate is relatively cool thanks to the maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean to the north, and the vines thrive in the area's chalky soil. This wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. After fermentation the wine aged for 28 months in 80% American oak barrels from West Virginia and 20% French Vosges oak barrels. It has matured in the Bodegas' cellar since then, softening to a silken smoothness and taking on immense complexity. We were able to procure a very small allotment. If you've never tried a great, fully mature red wine then you owe it to yourself to experience this exceptionally rare treat. If you have then you'll know that this is an opportunity you simply can't pass up. EXTREMELY LIMITED!
Opened the '70 Faustino I Rioja last night -- it was excellent out of the bottle and turned heavenly after decanting. The rich color told me we weren't too late, BUT the cork wasn't going to hold off this vintage much longer. There was just the slightest sediment.
In less than an hour a hint of oak had morphed into the perfect hint of jam. It had just the right balance of not too big and not too bold. One of our greatest wine experiences.
My wife pulled rank on me for the last 1.5 oz. When I gave customers 4 of the 6 bottles we purchased she instructed me to get more, which I have now done.
This wine is 44 years old. Drink it NOW!!! But I wouldn't share it with friends who drink Pinot Gris and Zinfandel.
Very balanced, good fruit of cherry without overbearing oak, very smooth. An excellent example of what a well crafted wine can become with age. Served blinded, universally liked and the best guess was an early 90s vintage. Highly recommended.
