Moonlighters 2010 Red Blend, South Australia, Red Heads Studio |
 |
Another over-the-top delicious wine from the folks at Red Heads. The idea here is that these award winnign winmakers take time out from their day jobs at the big labels to handcraft small lot gems from high quality grapes that they've stumbled upon. This latest batch is a blend of grapes from two sites in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek driven by Cabernet Sauvignon. It's 93% Cab with 4% Sangiovese and 3% Alicante Bouschet blended in and aged 12 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads. It has bright berry fruit on the nose with notes of spearmint and pepper. The Wine Spectator just scored it 91 points saying "Vibrant, generous and expressive, offering cherry and pomegranate flavors, with fine tannins wrapped around a hint of green tea on the finish. Drink now through 2016." Production is tiny as of course the winemakers at Red Heads are moonlighting to make this awesome wines. But as far as we're concerned they can quit their day jobs 'cause they've hit it big! Don't miss this one!!
