Barrel Monkeys 2012 Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Red Heads Studio
Adam Hooper, a Decanter Magazine South Australia Winemaker of the year, moonlights at the Red Heads Studio in McLaren Vale. Red Heads started in 2003 when Australia's overproduction problem hit a peak. Savvy winemakers like Hooper and others, started grabbing lots of premium quality grapes that wineries were turning away and fermenting these great grapes in open top barrels, in an old McLaren Vale bar called Red Heads. Barrel Monkeys has become on of the favorites of these small lot creations. Named for the cellar dwellers that produced it, grape lots from vineyards in the McLaren Vale with vines averaging over 30 year of age were slow fermented and then aged 14 months in American oak barrels (50% new). 2011 was a Wine Spectator Top 100 for 2013!
