Catena 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, High Mountain Vines, Mendoza
From Bodegas Catena Zapata comes this rich, dense 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that they call "High Mountain Vines." The grapes are sourced from three of their vineyards at very high elevations; La Piramide Vineyard, 3,117 feet, Domingo Vineyard, 3,675 feet and Adrianna Vineyard, 4,757. The high altitude means brilliant sunlight for ripening and cool temperatures at night for slow, even development of flavors and complexity. The Catena family has been producing outstanding Argentine wines for four generations and they have learned the best methods for handling these grapes. No cold fermentation and a 12-16 day maceration followed by 16 months of aging in French and American oak about 30% new. The wine shows deep color and rich aromas of cassis, cedar and tobacco. On the palate it is finely honed with robust but elegant flavors of black currant, black plum, coffee and cigar box cedar. Drinks beautifully now but structure and depth to age well for at least 3-5 years. Just scored 92 points in the Wine Advocate who said "The 2010 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes a five-day cold maceration and is raised for 12 to 14 months in barrel: first, second and third fill. It is a blend of four vineyards and is blended with 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackberry, bilberry, graphite and dry tobacco that is well-defined and classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There is a palpable sense of tension to this Cabernet, which exhibits great precision on the spicy, edgy finish. Full of personality, this comes highly recommended. Drink now-2017." A super value.

Comments about Catena 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, High Mountain Vines, Mendoza:

Better known for their arsenal of Malbecs, this entry level Cab from Catena is some pretty serious juice! The nose is super aromatic showing black currant, cola, plum and tobacco notes. It's a big and coating wine on the palate showing its youth. Yet the tannins are fairly smooth and the finish is long and dry. The best review I can give is that my wife thought it was a Napa Cab...and she knows her stuff!

Very good vino high altitude growth, these Argentinians are known for their Malbecs, but they sure can produce an outstanding Cabernet.
