When Bill and Ross Spence started their winemaking back in the early 70’s they gained immediate recognition for their innovative approach. They stared to win trophies and awards for their efforts and today Matua has won more international trophies and medals than any other New Zealand winery since 2012 (a total of 16 trophies and 32 gold medals). Bill Spence spoke to us about this 2012 Pinot Noir which they think is the best one they’ve produced so far. He said many of the early Pinot Noir Clones in Marlborough were selected for sparkling wine production. Now they’ve regrafted most of them to new clones much better suited to red wine in this cool climate and you can definitely taste it. The wine shows good Pinot character of strawberry, cranberry, cherry, cola and ample spice. It has a small percentage of central Otago fruit and it received eight months of oak aging, adding to the complexity. A super value Pinot!
