Haras de Pirque 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Gran Reserva, Albaclara, Maipo Valley
Haras de Pirque is a union of two passions; thoroughbred horse breeding and fine wine making. In Pirque, Chile in the foothills of the Andes, 290 acres of vineyards were planted in 1992 and since then the winery has turned out fine boutique quality wines named for their famous racehorses. Marchesi Antinori is now in charge of Haras and the famed Antinori family winemaking team led by Renzo Cotarella. The team's conviction that this Andean viticultural zone is an ideal growing region for the Sauvignon Blanc grape, has led to the creation of Albacara Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes are hand picked in February and early March to maintain their bright natural acidity. Cool fermentation techniques are employed in stainless steel tanks for 12-15 days to preserve freshness. Upon finish, the wine was left on light fermentation lees, with stirring once every two weeks until bottling in late June. This adds richness and texture to a wine that shows notes of orange peel, lime zest, grapefruit and a spicy herbaceousness. Refreshing acidity keeps it lively and a perfect match for seafood.
