Catena 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, High Mountain Vines, Mendoza
From Bodegas Catena Zapata comes this rich, dense Cabernet Sauvignon that they call "High Mountain Vines." The grapes are sourced from four of their vineyards at very high elevations; Agrelo 3,117 ft., Villa Bastías 3,675 ft., Altamira en La Consulta 3,593 ft., and Gualtallary 4,757 ft. The high altitude means brilliant sunlight for ripening and cool temperatures at night for slow, even development of flavors and complexity. The Catena family has been producing outstanding Argentine wines for four generations and they have learned the best methods for handling these grapes. 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Fermentation was 16 days followed by an extended maceration up to 32 days to extract flavor and soften the tannins. Then the wine was aged 12-14 months in French and American oak about 30% new. Robert Parker scored it 90 points and so did Steven Tanzer who said "Bright ruby-red. Expressive nose melds kirsch, black raspberry, licorice, violet and graphite. Quite graceful on the palate, at once liqueur-like and energetic, with flavors of currant, cedar and graphite spreading out to saturate the palate. Finishes sweet, juicy and long, with a hint of dried herbs contributing lift."
