Sancerre 2012 Reserve, Domaine Durand
From a small producer in France's Loire Valley comes this dazzling white wine, rich with grapefruit and gooseberry aromas. The estate boast mature 25-30 year old vines and a mix of chalky, silicious soils. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. It shows full flavors on the palate with enormous style and length. Crisp, fresh Sauvignon Blancs like this are why Sancerre has such an enormous and devoted following.

            I purchased this to try Sancerre since a friend and I have never had this particular grape before. On first try it started a bit sweet, but then the floral and more earthy flavors danced on our tongues. Afterwards the more settling dry notes hit our palatte and we were stunned at how smooth and sophisticated this wine really is to even those of us that are relatively new to white wines.

            Neither of us expected such complex and enjoyable experience from a white wine. This is an exceptional wine is a compromise for two people if one loves the dryness of the reds, yet another like the smooth, light notes of a white. We have since tried other Sancerre wines, but this one is the standout favorite so far. So much so that she and I will be purchasing a case very soon to ensure we have some around.
