Domaine de Baron 'Arques 2005 Limoux, Baronne Philippine de Rothschild
Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, owner of Mouton Rothschild and many other outstanding wine domaines purchased this estate in the Langedoc region of southern France in 1998. After extensive modernization and vineyard updating they are producing wines worthy of the Rothschild name. The Limoux appellation was created in 2003 and designates this unique microclimate. The estate holds 118 acres of vines and the grapes are a wide array from Merlot to Syrah. This 2005 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec, 10% Grenache and 10% Syrah. The vines are densely planted to reduce yields and the grapes are hand picked and hand selected in the winery. Aging is for 12 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. Additional bottle age has brought this 2005 to a delightful peak of complexity and soft drinkability. It shows sweet and savory notes of black plum, roasted pecans, mocha and brown spices in a supple well-knit package. An ideal rich red for drinking and enjoying right now. And even better, it's ON SALE!!!

Comments about Domaine de Baron 'Arques 2005 Limoux, Baronne Philippine de Rothschild:

While it's 50% Merlot, there are 5 other grapes in this blend each contributing to its distinctive character. The fruit is concentrated but not massive and there are some great secondary characteristics of roasted nuts, leather and smoke. It has a great balance of acidity and tannin and it finishes dry and long. A well made Languedoc wine indeed...

Comments about Domaine de Baron 'Arques 2005 Limoux, Baronne Philippine de Rothschild:

Here is yet another example of the rich and delectable wines coming from the Languedoc. This beauty has cassis and plum aromas with maturing layers on top. It is incredibly open and drinkable now, but I could see it aging a few years. Super smooth

Either use a wine aerator or let the wine breath to improve on smoothness.

This wine drinks beautifully right now and should continue to over the next 5-8 years.
