Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2006 Tempo, Terre di Talamo
Another outstanding wine from Marco Bacci group, this one is a standout Riserva DOC from Maremma. Morrellino is the name for the local clone of Sangiovese that grows in this cool enclave of Tuscany. Antonio Galloni's review in the Wine Advocate rates it 91 points saying "The 2006 Morellino di Scansano Tempo Riserva is a darker wine laced with smoke, earthiness grilled herbs, black cherries and an array of darker aromas and flavors. Still quite brooding, this masculine, intense Morellino will require a measure of patience, something I don’t think I have ever written about a Morellino in the past. Make no mistake about it, this is a serious wine. The Riserva is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Alicante, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon." At under $20 this wine is an AMAZING value!!

      What a fantastic expression of the Morellino grape. While they can sometimes be a little lighter and on the easy drinking side, this is the complete opposite. Lots of big and concentrated dark fruit is layered over the smokey cedar and tobacco spices. Really firm tannins but with a good amount of acidity, so it's quite food friendly and will also benefit from some aging. Totally agree with WA on this one, serious wine!

          I've said it - a work of art - at everyday price! Nothing casual about this wine here - massive red fruit, hints of spice and cigar box, only serious wine making chops can produce this truly one of a kind unfiltered beauty. This riserva easily beats some of my favorite Chiantis's.
