Santi traces its origins to 1843. Carlo Santi established the original winery in the heart of the most acclaimed wine growing zone in the Veneto near Lake Garda. The Santi Amarone is sourced from estate vineyards spread across multiple terroirs of the Valpolicella region. A blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara, the ripest grapes on the grape clusters are harvested in late October. Immediately following harvest the clusters are dried under shelter in flat wooden crates until late January of the following year. The drying process is the essence of Amarone. It greatly increases the natural sugar content and the concentration the grapes which then produce a powerful wine with myriad flavors. The wine is then aged up to three years in Allier and Slovenian oak casks prior to bottling. This 2008 Amarone is deep garnet red in color showing intense dried berry and plum notes, with smoky overtones, with hints of clove and cinnamon and a core of cherry jam flavor. The finish is long and complex with toasted almond and pecan nuances. Grab it now while it's ON SALE!!!
This has to be one of the better Amarones out there for under $40. Classic dried cherry and raisany aromas with hints of smoke and nuts. It is certainly a mouthful with intense fruit, but has lovely balance as well. The nutty finish hangs around long after the wine is gone...great for the price!
