Wild Rock 2009 Pinot Noir, Cupid's Arrow, Central Otago
New Zealand’s Central Otago is the World’s most Southerly wine growing region. It’s also the place that Pinot Noir guru Matt Kramer called "the next gold mine". That's because the cool climate in this region turns out Pinot Noir with bold character and intense flavors. And Pinot's from this region are in most cases, fairly pricy. That's what makes Wild Rock Cupid's Arrow so special. A joint venture between Craggy Range winery and Master of Wine Steve Smith, this Central Otago Pinot shows distinct character AND the price is right. Grapes are sourced from sustainable hillside vineyards in Central Otago's Cromwell Basin and Gibbston Valley. Hand harvested and fermented in small, open-top fermenters with indigenous yeasts. It's aged on fine lees in oak before bottling. It shows cherry, strawberry and cranberry aromas. It's bright and succulent on the palate with ripe berry flavors as well as hints of smoke and earth that all linger on a long juicy finish. A super value!

Comments about Wild Rock 2009 Pinot Noir, Cupid's Arrow, Central Otago:

This delightful pinot tasted as good as others twice the price. Wonderful expected strawbery notes with hints of cherry, spice and vanilla, let it decant for half hour and enjoy.

Comments about Wild Rock 2009 Pinot Noir, Cupid's Arrow, Central Otago:

You'd be hard pressed to find a better Pinot for under $15 from any region, let alone NZ. Lively and forward aromas of cherry and raspberry grab you from the get go. An outer edge of smoke, pepper and subtle mineral notes complete this balanced beauty. It's delicate yet bold enough to pair with a hearty poultry dish as well. Dare I say it…my new favorite Pinot under $15!

Comments about Wild Rock 2009 Pinot Noir, Cupid's Arrow, Central Otago:

This is a fairly heavy pinot. We dislike it to the point that I'm not sure what we will do with the remainder of the case we purchased.

Is there a region that produces pinot noir with a heavy peppery note

Not across the board. Sometimes Chilean Pinots have a very spicy character that might suggest pepper. The more peppery wines are usually Syrah from the northern Rhone, like Crozes-Hermitage.
