Vignafranca 2007 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Barba
For the second vintage in a row this wine was awarded Italy's most prestigious award; Tre Bicchieri from the Gambero Rosso. Out of the roughly 14,000 wines reviewed by Gambero Rosso only about 2% receive Tre Bicchieri. Consulting enologist Stephano Chioccioli is one of only two Italian winemakers to receive 100 points from The Wine Advocate. He works closely with the Barba family in the vineyards to keep yields low. The estate vineyards are located in the “Colline Teramane”, considered the finest growing area for Montepulciano in the entire region. Then in the winery he ferments in temperature controlled conditions in large oak vats and ages for 16 months in small oak barrels. The wine displays rich fruit, with black cherry, berry and plum along with lively spice, vanilla and tobacco notes. Tre Bicchieri wines in this price range are very rare indeed. Don’t miss it.

Comments about Vignafranca 2007 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Barba:

Received the delivery and was excited to open the box as I am a lover of a good Montepulcianos. Opened up a bottle and let it sit for 45 minutes, poured a glass, took a sip and almost spit it out. Waited another 30 minutes, took another sip and poured the rest down the drain. Will be giving the remaining 11 bottles away.

Rich bold wine that is good for serving with appetizers and weeknight dinners. Especially good with Italian style food.

Comments about Vignafranca 2007 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Barba:

I have previously bought a number of cases from Wine Express and always been pleased - particularly with the reasonably priced Italian wines that I purchased as a daily special (based on the virtual tastings comments/notes). Unfortunately, this wine did not measure up to its promotion; it is full-bodied....but not at all smooth, as I'd expected. I do not understand how this wine won any awards, as I have purchased other Italian wines from Wine Express that were far more enjoyable.

I have laid the remainder of the case down in our cellar, hoping that another year or two will mellow this vintage.

Comments about Vignafranca 2007 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Barba:

I tried this wine based on the points and price.
I found it to be a little harsh and lean for anything rated at 90 pts. I would place it closer to 85 but not for $20. This wine should be priced closer to $10 to reflect its quality and drinkability.

I realize that every grape grown is unique to its environment, but in order to help me make a decision to try something different, can you say what this Italian grape most resembles? For example, would it drink like a Pinot Noir or a Cab? a blend? Or another grape we grow in the U.S.? Would you say it is medium bodied or full bodied? Thanks for your guidance.

                  A:

It's hard to comapre iit to Cab or Pinot because it is different than both; drier, more full bodied than Pinot but softer, fruitier than Cab. If you've ever tried Chianti, it has many similarities. I would describe it as full-bodied.

When it grows up, it aspires to be its bigger neighbor, the Brunello. I tend to drink it with anything. And the Vignafrancas are especially good.
