Bodegas Faustino 2001 Rioja Gran Reserva I
Wine Express European Wine of the Year!!
Number 1 Wine of the Year in Decanter Magazine!

Out of the the more than 3,000 wines reviewed in 2013 by Europe's most prestigious wine journal Decanter, they selected this Rioja as their Wine of the Year. Faustino produces Gran Reserva in only the best vintages. With 1,625 acres of vineyards, located in the upper portion of the Rioja Alavesa, Faustino’s Gran Reserva wines are all estate grown and bottled. The wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. After fermentation it ages aged for 28 months in 80% American oak barrels from West Virginia and 20% French Vosges oak barrels. Then it matures in the Bodegas' cellar, softening to a silken smoothness and taking on immense complexity. Decanter's editors rated it 97 points overall. One wrote "A top example of an aged Rioja. Powerful yet elegant with a complex array of flavors. Delicate use of creamy oak and spicy, leathery notes with ripe bramble fruits leading to a mineral finish. A classy wine. Delicious to drink now but its freshness will enable further cellaring."

True Old World Style Rioja!
This is one complex and elegant wine. Wild and dark berry fruit are complimented by notes of smoked cedar, leather, toasted nuts and clove. Delicate and balanced on the plate, it finishes off dry with a chalky feel. Excellent value considering the caliber of wine this is.

Brilliant Rioja
*Tasted on 4/4/2015

Decanted for about two hours before enjoying from Bordeaux stems. Some fine sediment present in the last few mL. Enjoyed with some 5-year cheddar. Presents as clear ruby with some very minor orange highlights. Nose changed from sniff-to-sniff, bouncing between various combinations of red fruit (cherry), barnyard, humidor/moist tobacco, port fruit (raisin), and warm stone. It was wonderfully assembled on the palate, with an attack that smacked of tobacco/tobacco smoke and minerality; a midpalate of tobacco, dried fruit, and vanilla; and a generous finish of fresh cranberry and cherry juice. Oak was used well here. The structure was perfect, with supple tongue-coating tannins (with evidence of medium-intensity, well-integrated wood tannin) and balanced, medium(+) acidity. It didn't change over the course of consumption, which is in general agreement with others that have stated that this is drinking at peak with a little decanting.

The typicity and quality are just off the charts here. This is precisely what we wanted from this bottle. It doesn't bring anything to the table that we would say is really profound, which limits the score a bit. We'll call it "excellent," 93/100.

Bodegas Faustino 2001 Rioja Gran Reserva
A fair quaff, tannins still present, but past the peak I would expect from the ratings.

Flawed bottle?
Purchased a case - first bottle disappointing, not corked, but certainly not a wine to make Faustino proud. Nose good, fruit hollow, finish short. Does not compare well with other 2001 Gran Reservas. 87 points at best. Hopefully second bottle will show better.

Not Good - unbalanced, hollow, and short
My wines are well maintained. I tried the Roja just after cracking it, then decanted it, then tried it over the next hour. It went from bad to tolerable, but never good. It was unbalanced and hollow with heavy tannins no fruit and all smoke. With a short finish. I have 3 more bottles that I will try at some point before giving the rest away.

A disappointment – purchased a case – first bottle tasted showed promising nose, but fruit flavors were hollow and finish disappointingly brief. I have had other 2001 Gran Reservas with lower scores and less pedigree that were better wines. I am typically in agreement with Decanter ratings but to me this wine is 87pts at best. If second bottle shows better I will assume first bottle was flawed.

BEST ANSWER: Update: Second bottle showed much better (I suppose bottle variation is to be expected as we try older vintages). Much more open and better after an hour of breathing with flavors aligned and seamless.
Where is the 1985 vintage you advertised as a tip?
