Rotta, Red Blend, San Luis Obispo
Rotta is an historic winery in Paso Robles. It's one of the first, established in 1908 but the founder actually built a winery there in Templeton in 1856. The gap in the Santa Maria Mountains that allows ocean breezes inland is why Templeton is such an ideal micro-climate for grape growing. Driving down the road the old vine vineyards just flow one into the other and just past Turley Vineyards on the left, Rotta's barn-like winery building appears. The hills around and behind the building are all full of thick-trucked old vines. This wine is one that the new owners of the winery came up with after they harvested 2012 and realized they had big quantities of fruit. In the cellars were already aging, barrels of wine from 2011 and 2010. So the decision was made to produce a blend of all of these. It consists of Zinfandel, Alicante, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc and perhaps dash of one or two others. The wine shows a delightfully complex nose of black cherry, plum, ginger snap, aged tobacco, licorice and cocoa. on the palate it's beautifully dry with supple tannins and bold flavors. Again there's black cherry, plums, brown spice, tobacco and dark chocolate. A perfect match for anything off the grill as well as your favorite well-spiced dished or perhaps even a fine cigar. Rotta Red is good expression of this unique terroir and a super value. Don't miss it!

Comments about Rotta, Red Blend, San Luis Obispo:

Jam packed with berry goodness, this is a pleasure to drink from start to finish. Don't let the NV scare you, it's mostly 12 juice and the past vintages adds some lovely balance and integrated oak nuances. Dark berry, dark choclate, black pepper and annisette are there on the nose and palate. Lush fruit and firm tannins give this a great mouthfeel and finish. Stock up for the summer grillin' season!

Comments about Rotta, Red Blend, San Luis Obispo:

This wine was ok. It didn't "knock my socks off" but made a good drinking wine with friends. My true test of a good wine is drinkability all by itself and then enhanced when paired.

You'll taste the pedigree of the neighborhood in this ripe red from across the road from Turley! The best part is it costs you a fraction of the price.

I just ordered this wine and I'm looking forward to trying it! Is this a wine that would benefit from aging?

                A:

                Craig,
Thanks for your question and kind comments. This is a wine that drinks well right now but will continue to evolve over the next few years (2-3) revealing more nuance and expression.
