Seghesio 2009 Old Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma County |
 |
Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel blends the finest lots from vineyards planted between 1920-1950 on the benchlands of Dry Creek and western Alexander Valleys. Although "Old Vine" is often loosely interpreted in the wine industry, the benchmark here is fifty years. True "Old Vine" Zin is distinguished by dry-farmed, thick, gnarled trunks and planted with historic clones dating back to the years before Prohibition. In each of these old blocks, vines of Carignane and/or Petite Sirah are inter-planted, as was typical of the era. The small concentrated berries these old vines produce are fermented in small open-top barrels and then aged in primarily French oak barrels for 15 months. This 2009 is an Editors Choice with a 94 point score in Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "As chewy and umami, salty delicious as a mouthful of crunchy bacon. Throw in dried blackberries and blueberries, with a touch of smoky new oak, and that describes this fantastically pure, addictively good Zinfandel. The grape sourcing is from old vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. Truly a great Zin" Limited!
