Brazin 2009 Zinfandel, Old Vine, Lodi |
 |
Lodi is a prime source for old vine Zinfandel. The warm climate and and the good draining sandy soils let roots go deep and vines get stressed looking for water. Many of the old plantings go back 100 years and because the sandy soil is inhospitable to phyloxera some are still on their original root stock. Brazin sources these grapes, many from the Cusamano vineyard in the Mokelumne River sub-AVA of Lodi. Vines average 40-100 year old and the fruit is deeply concentrated and expressive. Aged seven months in a combination of French and American oak, this wine shows bright berry and spice flavors with a rich, mouthfilling texture. The flavors linger on the finish with notes of chocolate and black raspberry. This wine shows complexity way beyond its price point. Awarded no less than 4 medal including a Gold Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, they described it as "True to character...exhibits aromas of dark fruit and spice; flavors of plum, spice and chocolate; long finish."
