Renwood established itself as a premier producer of rich, Amador County Zins, many from old vine vineyards back in the 90's. Now it's getting renewed life with a new team taking over that includes world renowned enologist Alberto Antonini and Zinfandel expert Kent Rosenblum consulting. So far it looks like they've got a winning combination on their hands producing gems like this Premier Old Vine 2011 Zin. It's a blend of 90% Zinfandel, 5% Primitivo, 3% Syrah and 2% Barbera aged 18 months in oak. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "A ripe and tasty style of Zinfandel from a grand old name in the Sierra Foothills. The maple and brown sugar tones from new oak integrate well with ripe but not overripe fruit flavors. Touches of clove and black pepper come out as you sip, adding welcome nuances."
This Renwood continues the quality of the past 12 plus years. Have been drinking this quality old vine zinfindel since 2002, and every year they deliver an excellent spicy and deep Zin. The 2011 has all the old vine Zin qualities, it is very fruit forward with bold plum and blackberry flavors, very good acidity which livens up the wine, the tannins are very firm, with nice oak nuances which bring out cinnamon and holiday spices like nutmeg, cocoa, and vanilla bean. Have cellared these wines with great results. Mark Twain drank wines in the early 1900s from these same old vine zinfindel grape vineyards. This 2011 combines their Zin old vine grapes with some of the best other wineries in the Sierra Foothills region. This region has over 125 year old vines that are both bold and spicy. The wine is also almost chewy and just plain delicious! The Sierra foothills put out really excellent spicy and complex quality Zins at a very good price. This one is no expection, try this you will like it!!
