Terra D'Oro 2011 Zinfandel, Amador County
Amador County in the Sierra Foothills is home to some of the earliest Zinfandel plantings in California. Gold rush pioneers planted it in the mid-1800's and Zin has been grown there ever since. And conditions are ideal with a beautiful warm climate and rocky soils with good drainage. Terra D'Oro head trains and spur prunes all of it's Zinfandel vines to keep yields low. The grapes are hand picked and lots go into the crusher and are bled off to further enhance extraction and concentration. During fermentation the tanks are drained and refilled three times to extract maximum color and flavor. The wine is then aged 16 months in Hungarian, French and American oak barrels. The finished wine shows sweet, ripe flavors and zesty spice. Black plums, wild blackberries, molasses, cinnamon and vanilla flavors wash over the palate and linger. It's a distinctive and vibrant wine. A Wine Express favorite!

Comments about Terra D'Oro 2011 Zinfandel, Amador County:

Not only is Amador a beautiful area of CA but it produces some amazing zins and pinots. This wine is an elegantly constrained specimen compared to some over the top fruit laden ones from that area. It is clean, slightly spicy, goes well with many foods as well as can be had as an aperitif. Stands up to the best primitivos of Italy.

Comments about Terra D'Oro 2011 Zinfandel, Amador County:

This is a perennial favorite value Zin of mine, especially under $15. This vintage carries all of the classic blackberry and blueberry fruit with nice peppery spice and hints of toasty vanilla. The tannins are smooth and mellow and there is some nice acidity so no need to wait as this is drinking very nicely as is.

Terra d'Oro Zin is always a staff favorite. It has big, bold flavors and the Amador County is their best value. If you like your Zins ripe and jammy, this is the one for you!

Comments about Terra D'Oro 2011 Zinfandel, Amador County:

Zins are nice. They are one of California's more popular grapes, but this one kinda left me saying ooooooh....they should have just make raisins out of them. I've only opened one of three bottles, so my comments may not be noteworthy. I am more into the Tuscan reds and that may also make me a wee bit bias. So before you decide, consider that it isn't very expensive - so it may be worth a try. For me, it was a bit too pruny (raisins and prunes)and also a little high on the alcohol content. Alcohol is not bad, but it got in they way of other things. If given another chance - I would only pay $8 at the most for this one.
