Teatown Cellars 2006 Merlot, Napa Valley

This red from over-achiever Teatown Cellars, is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlot comes from the Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga at the foothills of the Palisade Mountains. This prime vineyard also provides grapes to top wineries like Etude, Plumpjack, Joseph Phelps, Lewis Vineyards and Robert Mondavi among others. The wine is aged in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels for about 14 months providing some dimension and complexity while still maintaining the integrity and character of the Napa Valley fruit. A few years of bottle age have made it silky smooth and extremely appealing. Another incredible value from Teatown Cellars.

These guys at Teatown Cellars are putting out some really solid value reds. First the memorable 2005 Red Bank Red, and now their Napa Merlot. Not quite the same backbone that the RBR had but some of the same beautiful Napa fruit on the nose and palate balanced with subtle spices and oak components. The acidity gives this Merlot a real food friendly character and would pair well with lighter meat dishes or even pizza and pasta!

I love a good Cabernet and I think of Merlot as a softer wine. I bought a case of this wine and after four bottles, I haven't really warmed up to it. To me, it tastes more like a Merlot/Syrah mix. I have consumed several Napa Merlots and this just dosen't measure up. My son and I shared it with Smoked Salmon and Smoked Gouda and it wasn't all that bad. I just haven't been able make it work with anything else so far. I have a few bottles left and I hoping "we" can get together.
