Stonestreet 2008 Fifth Ridge Red, Alexander Mountain Estate, Alexander Valley
Stonestreet wines are all grown on the Alexander Mountain Estate; 235 individual vineyard blocks on the western ridge of the Mayacamas Mountain range towering over the Alexander Valley below. High elevations, volcanically derived soils and cooling maritime breezes make it a very unique location and one where mountain grape growing reaches a pinnacle. Most of their wines are single vineyard releases that critics go wild over. This 2008 is a blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from several vineyards on the fifth mountain ridge in from the ocean. Hence, the name. The wine was fermented in tank and then aged 17 months in 66% new French oak barrels. this 2008 is showing beautifully. The nose is savory, marked by walnut, dark chocolate, coffee and black olivee and on the palate there's a core of bright cherry and black currant fruit. The tannins are supple and sinewy lending a mouthfilling texture and a graphite-flavored note on the long finish. Limited!

Comments about Stonestreet 2008 Fifth Ridge Red, Alexander Mountain Estate, Alexander Valley:

Stonestreet hit another home run with their latest vintage of the Fifth Ridge Bordeaux style blend. Lots of big, lush, dark fruit surrounded by vanilla and baking spices. It's a biggie right now, but with some aeration the tannins smoothed a bit and showed some really impressive balance. Super long and dry finish, tremendous value.

Comments about Stonestreet 2008 Fifth Ridge Red, Alexander Mountain Estate, Alexander Valley:

First taste appeared as if it had much to offer. The offering was false. It had a hint of tart cherry but, even that was hard to nail down. Just nothing to recommend as it did not finish well at all.

Comments about Stonestreet 2008 Fifth Ridge Red, Alexander Mountain Estate, Alexander Valley:

This 2008 blend from the Jacksons Stonestreet Winery plain and simply misses the boat. This wine has a bit of raspberry fruit on the palate, but goes flat with high alcohol with little or no spices or special fruit on the mid palate. The wine then finishes flat with little to recommend. I was quite surprised as I was really expecting so much more. I have another bottle of the 2006, which I hope shows better. The nose showed some promise, but the tasting was average at best. KJ wines are usually very good and a great value. Also gave this wine an hour to decant, with no real improvement.
