Pinot Noir 2012 Piemonte DOC, Monte Degli Angeli
Brothers Antonio and Paolo Sperone own and manage this small family estate in the Piedmont. Having already discovered their extremely good, value-priced Barolo, we had to try their Pinot Noir when we heard about it. And we were very impressed. Not just because it is a textbook example of beautifully balanced, cool-climate grown Pinot Noir, but because the price was unheard of for a wine of this quality. Piedmont is a very similar micro-climate to Burgundy and this Pinot shows classic characteristics of black cherry and strawberry fruit with bright acidity, earthy nuances and lively tannins. It's aged six months in oak barrels and shows a marked complexity. This is one you've got to try!

      Who would have expected a bright, lively and varietally true Pinot Noir to come out of Piedmonte...not me! But that's exactly what this wine is. Lovely cherry and raspberry aromas carry over to the palate along with some peppery spice. It has a bit more acid than tannins but it is all in balance making for a really pleasant Pinot, especially at this price!

        Piedmont may not be the first place you like for Pinot Noir, but by the taste of this wine, I'm sure we'll see more of it. Josh and I were skeptics but upon tasting the Monte Degli Pinot, we realized they've got something worth paying attention to. It's filled with bright red cherry and is super smooth, with balanced and lingering flavors.

            from the virtual tasting, it seemed clear that this wine is drinkable now. For the price, I'd consider getting 6 or more. would this wine hold up if it were cellared and if so, for approximately how long would it be good? thank you.

              This wine has a good backbone. Cellared properly we'd expect it to show well for at least the next 2-3 years.
