Chaix 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford, Napa Valley
Item Number: 13 20 299 10
It's not every day you discover a new Cab from Rutherford. And from a family owned vineyard yet! Four generations ago their great grandfather arrived from France and purchased farmland in Napa Valley. Today, Kathy and John Chaix are the proprietors of the 40 acre Chaix Vineyard in the heart of the Rutherford Bench. For years the vineyard has supplied top-tier Cabernet fruit to many of Napa Valley's best wineries. For this wine they've selected a prime lot from a block planted in 1991. They hired UC Davis graduate Sam Baxter, son of Phil Baxter who created legendary Cabs at Charles Krug, Rutherford Hill, Souverain and many others over the years, to do the winemaking. This is a limited 300 case bottling of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was aged 22 months in 60% new French oak barrels. The mature vines bring lower yields and bold intensity to the fruit. But of course bold intensity is what Rutherford Cab is all about. Brimming with cassis, black cherry, anise and cocoa flavors there's a rich tannic backbone and noted minerality, "Rutherford Dust" anyone? This is top-tier Napa Cab at an undiscovered, under-the-radar price! At the Rutherford Dust Society tasting of 2010's, Chaix was a standout according to Examiner.com who said "a very intense nose of cedar, dark fruit, safe and earthiness to it. As you taste this wine you will love the bright wild fruit, a blend of blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry. The sharp acidity, layers of spices and soft structured tannins makes it a delight to enjoy." Don't miss it!
