Chalk Hill 2010 Estate Red Blend, Chalk Hill AVA
Item Number: 28 20 183 10
Chalk Hill Estate is a compendium of unique microclimates, exposures and soil types. Nowhere is this ideal situation more evident than in this Estate Red blend. This wine is best blend of the red wines made from the estate. Each variety is perfectly matched to the vineyard site. This 2010 Estate Red features Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Carmenere, each in harmony with the others. Our original estate vineyard features a number of blocks with shallow, clay soils that accentuate the structure of Merlot and Malbec. Most of the fruit came from the 56-acre Estate West vineyard which has proven ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Yields were extremely low, averaging a mere 1.5 tons per acre of very concentrated fruit. After fermentation, the wine was aged in 58% new French oak barrels for 22 months. To preserve its texture and aromatics, the wine was bottled unfiltered. It scored 91 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and 91+ from Robert Parker who said "The 2010 Proprietary Red Estate (43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 15% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 10% Syrah and 1% Carmenere) is something to be endorsed as the wine world tries to move from a varietal-conscious, mono-cepage philosophy to where the best wines will tend to be blends, even if they are dominated by one grape or another. Chalk Hillís 2010 Red Estate exhibits an inky/purple color followed by aromas of black olives, cassis and toast. Rich, full-bodied and expressive, it is built for the long haul rather than for current drinkability. A beautiful texture, full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity and a long finish suggest it will be significantly more complex and softer in 5-10 years, and last for 20-25+ years."
