Glen Carlou 2011 Grand Classique Red, Paarl, South Africa
Located in South Africa's Paarl region, the Glen Carlou Winery is known for its internationally acclaimed Chardonnay and Bordeaux varietals. At the base of the Simonsberg Mountains, Glen Carlou's vineyards are influenced by the unique weather of the Cape, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. In South Africa Bordeaux style blends are the wines that generally carry the most prestige and frequently exceed the quality of actual Bordeaux of similar cost. Fruit for this classic blend is from selected vineyard sites Ė handpicked. Each varietal is crushed, macerated, fermented and aged in French oak barrels separately before the final blend is put together. 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Petit Verdot, 12% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 11% Malbec, the wine aged 18 months in 40% new oak. The wine is a true Bordeaux blend with all five varietals. It shows a dark ruby-garnet hue. Now at 5 years of aged it has well integrated blackberry fruits with hints of cedar and eucalyptus as well as concentrated briary flavors. Itís ripe concentrated, well balanced and medium to full bodied with a long finish. Itís a richly rewarding wine that delivers well beyond the modest price tag. Donít miss it.
