Ferrari-Carano 2013 Siena, Red Blend, Sonoma County
Siena was one of the first premium Sangiovese blends made in California. Ferrari-Carano has produced this wine with consistently superb results for over 20 years now. A reflection of their Italian heritage Siena is a wine that has been continually honed over the years to find the perfect formula. This vintage, along with Sangiovese that includes Malbec, Petite Sirah and some Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are sourced from estate vineyards in Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley, as well as from other premium vineyards in Sonoma. The wine is aged in 20% new Hungarian oak barrels and some older French oak for a total of 12 months. The style emphasizes the bright cherry fruit that Sangiovese is known for. It brings ripe flavors of black cherry, licorice, mocha and black pepper along with supple tannins and lively acidity. It's luscious to drink right now.
This wine, from which there have been a number good and a few great vintages, is once again in the running. Fruit-forward, and somewhat light on the mid palette, it is nevertheless a memorable addition to your everyday wines.
