Haras De Pirque 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva, Hussonet, Maipo Valley

Customer Rating Based on a scale of 1 to 5 glasses

Haras de Pirque is a union of two passions in a unique place where thoroughbred horse breeding and fine wine making come together. In Pirque, Chile in the foothills of the Andes they planted 290 acres of vineyards in 1992, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. They produce outstanding wines and name them for their famous racehorses like this Hussonet Gran Reserva Cab. Owned by the famed Antinori Family of Tuscany their winemaking team led by Renzo Cotarella is in charge of the whole process. Grapes were hand-picked end of April. The special parcels selected for Hussonet undergo careful hand management throughout the year to produce grapes of very high quality. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the lots are vinified separately and the wine is aged 12 months in French oak barrels. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered. James Suckling scored this 2011 a whopping 95 points and said "A classy cabernet with mint, walnut, spearmint and black currant character. Full body, solid core of fruit and lots of polished tannins that gives the wine form. A red made by the great Italian winemaking family of Antinori. Better in 2017."

Fantastic at this price
I am NOT a wine expert, I just buy and drink a fair amount of it, mostly at prices much higher than this - until now. After trying two bottles with different sets of guests, I ordered 2 more cases, so that kinda sums it up.

Is this Sauvignon on the dry side?
A shopper on May 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Have not opened the Haras Cab yet but do try the Reguci Cab 2012 as it is not to dry and seems just right to me. Well worth the $55 price. Give it a half hour to breath first. The best Cab I have ever tried yet for the price. Another cab is the LUC PIRLET 2013 reserve. One of the few Cabs that drink smooth before, during and after a meal. Both are outstanding wines to pair with any red meat or even a red sauce pasta. ENJOY.
with a red sauce.
