Matanzas Creek 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County
The majority of the fruit in this vintage came from Matanzas vineyards in Knights Valley, which is on the border of Sonoma and Napa counties. This is one of the best regions for growing Sauvignon Blanc in Sonoma County, and the Knights Valley fruit contributes the white peach that runs through this wine. Primarily fermented for 2-3 weeks in stainless steel tanks at low temperature. Then, 17% was fermented in neutral oak barrels. Select Sauvignon Blanc yeast was used, transforming aromatic precursors into intense aromas of grapefruit and fresh passion fruit. Wine Blogger Steve Heimoff just held a Sauvignon Blanc blind tasting and this wine wine came out on top (ahead of luminaries like Robert Mondavi 2013 To Kalon Vineyard Reserve Fumé Blanc, Peter Michael 2014 L'Apres-Midi Sauvignon Blanc and Cardinale 2014 Intrada Sauvignon Blanc among others). He scored it 94 points and said "The surprise was the Matanzas Creek Sonoma County—it's not one of the winery's top tier Sauvignon Blancs (which are Bennett Valley, Helena Bench and Journey) but the basic regional blend. But then, I've worked with small lots of all Matanzas's vineyards, and know how good the source fruit is. This is really a delightful wine, and a testament to the fact that great wine doesn't have to be expensive. It's also testament to the art of blending."
