CJ Melka 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley |
 |
Melka is probably the most famous California winemaker you've never heard of. He's on of the most prolific and sought after Consulting Enologists in Napa. He moved here from Bordeaux to serve on the production team of Dominus, the Napa winery owned and operated by his fellow Bordelais, the Moueix family of Chateau Petrus. Since then he has consulted for dozens of California wineries, including some of the most rarified names in the cult category such as Bryant Family, Vineyard 29, Marston Family and Dalla Valle, and of course his own label, Melka Wines. The 2007 is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 9% Petite Verdot all from Prime Napa Valley Vineyards. The was aged 19 months in French oak, 75% new. Robert Parker scored it 90 points saying "A good bargain (Napa speaking) is the 2007 CJ, a 1,300-case blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. This seductive, hedonistic, dense ruby/purple-colored offering exhibits plenty of black currant, licorice, smoke, and earth characteristics along with an outstanding texture, good plushness and opulence, and 7-10 years of life ahead of it."
