Argiolas 2009 Costera, IGT Isola dei Nuraghi
On the island of Sardinia off Italy's coast is one of the very few places you will find Italian Grenache. It is called Cannonau and grows very well there. Located amid Sardinia's natural beauty, just north of Cagliari, the Argiolas estate is widely known for its crisp and refreshing white wines and complex and precocious reds. Antonio Argiolas and his twin sons, Franco and Giuseppe, have worked diligently to fulfill their commitment to become the leaders in Sardinian enology. And the Wine Advocate has said that Argiolas produces, essential wines for those looking to discover what the wines and viticulture of Sardinia are all about. This Cannonau red scored 91 points in that publication. They went on to say "The estate’s 2009 Isola dei Nuraghi Costera flows from the glass with layers of exquisitely perfumed fruit buttressed by fine, silky tannins. There is an element of pure elegance and refinement that is hard to do justice to with words. This is another terrific red from Argiolas. Costera is a blend of 90% Cannonau, 5% Carignano and 5% Bovale Sardo. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014."

Comments about Argiolas 2009 Costera, IGT Isola dei Nuraghi:

Apparently they handle Grenache pretty well in Sardinia as this rich red demonstrates. On the nose it's got floral notes, herbs and black fruits then it's rich and expansive on the palate. Not exactly a Super Tuscan, but sure to convince you they should be growing more French grapes in Italy!

Comments about Argiolas 2009 Costera, IGT Isola dei Nuraghi:

If you have yet to taste a wine from the Isle of Sardinia, make this one your first! The local Cannonau grape (Grenache) has been to known to produce elegant red wines with perfumed, vibrant fruit and this one is no different. It has a silky smooth mouthfeel with great balance of acids and tannins. No need to age this wine, drinking nicely right now.
