Hanzell 2011 Chardonnay, Sabella, Sonoma Valley |
 |
Hanzell in Sonoma is renowned for their incredible, age-worthy Chardonnay. Founded in the 1950's by Ambassador J.D. Zellerbach with 200 hillside acre in the Mayacamas Range. The wines have a devoted following and rarely appear beyond the winery's mailing list but here is something new that's both available and affordable. Produced from the estate's young vines vineyards, Sabella Chard offers a forward and youthful expression. The juice is slowly fermented in stainless steel tanks. Just prior to completion, the wine is racked into to French oak barrels where it finishes fermentation and ages sur-lie for six months. Malolactic fermentation is inhibited to preserve the fresh, floral qualities and lively acidity. It shows light floral and citrus, pear and apple all framed by classic Hanzell minerality. On the palate there is nice weight and fullness, with flavors of green apple, tangerine, white peach and minerals with focued, bracing acidity and a long lemony finish.
